One bright, young lawyer recruited out of Stanford was nervously about to begin her first independent job search. A top-performing senior consulting manager in a price-warring situation was frustrated, burned-out and toyed with leaving her long time employer. A Haas MBA, newly-minted, was eager, but anxious to go through the highly competitive on-campus interview process. Finally, a high-performing individual contributor had to decide whether to move up into a management position.
These are some of the 1000 individuals I've had the privilege to coach since 1988. Some of their quotes are above. Combining tools from consulting, organizational behavior, and narrative theory, I help them see the story: financial, strategic, interpersonal, emotional, developmental, and research-based, beneath each dilemma's chaos. Through our phased contracts, they've learned to:
- Prepare and strategize for case or scenario interviews
- Get focused and employed after months of uncertainty
- Find a new job in eight to ten weeks (pre-recession)
- On-board quickly and meet multiple initial deadlines
- Decide on a promotion possibility
- Regain motivation and focus to turn around problem employment
- Prioritize workload to regain happiness and fulfillment, and a sense of progress
